1.0 BACKGROUND

1.1 The Trinidad & Tobago Registered Nurses Association ‘s Academy was established In 1990,  to cater to the needs of the Registered Nurses and Enrolled Nursing Assistants through the offering of short courses as well as one (1) day and two (2) day programmes as needed by the nursing personnel in the country.
1.2 In 1996, the association recognized that there was a need and a market for Home care programmes which could not be satisfied by the existing agencies which were at that time offering those programmes to the public. The first programme was conducted in one of the classrooms in the then School of Nursing, General Hospital Port-of-Spain. The Academy continues to be the Agency within the TTRNA with the mandate to provide the environment for continuous growth and professional development not only for the nurses and midwives but members of the general public who access its programmes.

2.0 PHILOSOPHY

2.1 The Academy must provide programmes to the professional nurses and the public which will increase their knowledge & skills to ensure the delivery of efficient and effective nursing care.
2.2 Excellence in nursing practice is achieved through the adherence to the highest possible standards of accountability and responsibility.
2.3 Excellence in patient/client care can be best achieved through the integration of education programmes with health service delivery and research
2.4 The TTRNA’s Nursing Academy continues its strong commitment to the promotion of the highest standard of practice and to the provision of a quality learning environment in which students are supported as they strive towards reaching their full potential.

5.0 VISION

5.1 The vision of TTRNA’s Nursing Academy is to be the provider agency offering the highest quality Nursing Education programmes to Nursing Personnel for CME credits and to persons who wish to acquire the necessary skills to engage in the service of Nursing.

6.0 MISSION

6.1 The Trinidad & Tobago Registered Nurses Academy will provide quality cost effective education & training to its customers in an environment which facilitates learning and allows for the acquisition of skills and attitudes to ensure safe and efficient nursing service delivery.

7.0 PROGRAMMES OFFERED

7.1 At the inception, the Academy conducted professional programmes; these include Health Care Management, electrocardiograph training, and training in intravenous therapy and Renal Dialysis for both the public and private sector institutions. It proceeded to conduct public programmes as it felt there was a need for such programmes.
7.2 The public programmes include caring for the chronically ill and the elderly in the home; caring for the HIV/AIDS patient, caring for the infant and child up to the age of twelve (12) years. These programmes are offered at two levels, basic and advance levels.
7.2.1 The dates of the first cycle for 2017 Public programmes are - :
• Basic Home Care, Infant and Child Care February 4th – June 17th2017.
• Advance Home Care, Infant and Child Care February 11th – June 3rd 2017
7.3 The Academy proposes to increase its range of programmes by offering short courses in areas that would enhance the Nurses ’practice and the care for the clients we serve e.g. The Ethico –Legal issues in Nursing, Management of Homes for the Aged, this is expected to begin as early as March, 2017. The Academy is also proposing that groups of nurses interested in particular courses can make a request to the academy for the programmes to be conducted.
